Elmalı is the complete opposite of coastal Antalya. The town sits at 1,100 metres on the edge of a wide plain, its streets still lined with 19th-century timber and stone houses.
The mountains around it hold some of the densest stands of Taurus cedar in the country. Kızlarsivrisi, at 3,070 metres the highest point in Antalya province, lies within the district and is climbed in summer.
Lake Avlan and Karagöl are known for birdwatching and picnics. The district is also known for its apples and cherries — indeed its name comes from the apple.
When to go
June to September is the window, and the summit climb needs July or August. Winters bring heavy snow and roads can close. Spring brings wildflowers to the plain, and cherries ripen in June.
Getting there
One hundred and ten kilometres from central Antalya, about two hours by car over mountain passes. Finike is 55 km away and Korkuteli 60 km. Public transport is limited, so driving is the practical choice.
What to see in Elmalı
Kızlarsivrisi (3,070 m)
Antalya's highest summit. Climbs run July to September and are best done with a guided group; the Mediterranean is visible from the top.
Elmalı cedar forests
One of the densest Taurus cedar areas in Turkey, with some trees over a thousand years old. Forest tracks suit walking and cycling.
Lake Avlan
A lake known for birdwatching and picnics. Drained decades ago and since refilled, it is ringed by cedar forest.
Frequently asked questions
Can you climb Kızlarsivrisi without a guide?+
It is not advised. Parts of the route are unmarked and conditions change quickly. The climb takes a full day; guided groups run from July to September.
Can Elmalı be visited in winter?+
Heavy snow makes access difficult and mountain roads can close temporarily. If travelling in winter, check the weather and road status beforehand.
