What to know about Kaş

Kaş has kept the character of the Lycian coast better than anywhere else. The town itself stays small — narrow lanes running down to the sea, an ancient theatre, boutique guesthouses rather than resort complexes.

It is also one of Turkey's best-known diving centres. Clear visibility, wrecks and caves keep the season open from April to November, and paddling a sea kayak over the sunken city at Kekova is the signature trip.

On its western edge lies Patara: an 18-kilometre beach, an ancient city among the dunes and the assembly hall of the Lycian League — beach and history in one place. Kaputaş, reached by steps from the coast road, is the small, much-photographed cove at the mouth of a narrow gorge.

When to go

The sea is warm from June to October, and diving runs April to November. April-May and October suit the ruins and the Lycian Way best. In July and August, Kaputaş is crowded around midday.

Getting there

Antalya Airport (AYT) is 190 km east, about 3.5 hours by road. Dalaman Airport is 160 km west, roughly 2.5 hours. From Kaş it is 27 km to Kalkan, 42 km to Patara and 40 km to Üçağız, the jetty for Kekova.

What to see in Kaş

  • Kaputaş Beach

A turquoise cove reached by 190 steps from the coast road. Small and shadeless — early morning or late afternoon is far more comfortable than midday.

  • Kekova and the Sunken City

Walls and stairways of a settlement submerged by earthquake, visible through clear water. Seen by glass-bottom boat or sea kayak; swimming there is prohibited.

  • Patara: city and beach

Eighteen kilometres of sand, a theatre among the dunes and the Lycian League assembly hall. As a turtle nesting site, the beach closes at sunset.

  • Diving off Kaş

Wrecks, caves and drop-offs in some of the clearest water in Turkey. Discovery dives for beginners are widely available.

Frequently asked questions

Can you swim at Kekova?+

Swimming and diving are banned over the sunken city, which is a protected site. Boat tours stop for a swim in nearby bays and only pass over the ruins.

How do you get down to Kaputaş?+

By a 190-step staircase from the parking area on the coast road. The climb back is tiring — bring water and a hat. Shade and sunbeds are limited.

Do I need experience to dive in Kaş?+

No. Discovery dives with an instructor are offered for uncertified visitors, while certified divers can reach the wreck and cave sites.
