Kemer sits on a narrow shore where the Bey Mountains drop straight into the sea. Pebble beaches, pine forest and the 2,365-metre Mount Tahtalı define the view, and the water is noticeably clearer than on Antalya's eastern coast.
The best-known ancient site is Phaselis, a harbour city with three natural bays where the colonnaded street runs straight onto the beach — you can tour the ruins and swim in the same visit.
South lie Çıralı and Olympos. Above Çıralı, natural gas seeping from the rock at Yanartaş has burned by itself for millennia; in antiquity these flames were taken for the Chimaera, and they show best after dark.
When to go
The sea is warm from June to October, a few degrees cooler than the eastern coast. March-May and October-November are ideal for hiking and the Lycian Way. Visit Yanartaş in the evening.
Getting there
Antalya Airport (AYT) is 55 km northeast, a 50-60 minute transfer. Buses from central Antalya take about an hour. Çıralı and Olympos are 35-40 km from Kemer, down a narrow road off the coastal highway.
What to see in Kemer
Phaselis
An ancient harbour city with three bays. The colonnaded street runs down onto the sand, so sightseeing and swimming combine. Fifteen kilometres from the centre.
Yanartaş (Chimaera)
A hillside above Çıralı where escaping gas burns continuously. A stony 20-30 minute climb leads up; the flames are clearest at dusk.
Tahtalı cable car
Ten minutes to a 2,365-metre summit. It is 15-20°C colder up there than at the shore, so bring a jacket even in summer.
Olympos and Adrasan
A valley where ruins are scattered among the trees, opening onto a long pebble beach. One of the most walked stages of the Lycian Way passes here.
Frequently asked questions
Are the beaches in Kemer sandy?+
Mostly pebble, which is why the water is so clear — water shoes help. Phaselis and Adrasan have mixed sand-and-pebble stretches.
Is the climb to Yanartaş difficult?+
Moderate: a stony path of 20-30 minutes from the car park. Since the flames look best after dark, bring a torch and closed shoes.
Does the Tahtalı cable car run in summer?+
Yes, all year. Service can pause in high wind. The summit runs 15-20°C colder than the coast, so a light jacket is sensible even in August.
